Tavira is
a small but beautiful city with historical charm, and yet it is being tastefully modernised without destroying its
character.
It is
still a working fishing port and is famous for its interesting buildings, numerous churches, fabulous beaches and
the Ria Formosa nature reserve - a Unesco World Heritage site – which abounds with bird life.

Tavira is regarded as
the most graceful and elegant town on the Algarve. Known as the Venice of the Algarve, it has a history
going back to Roman and Moorish times. With its maze of narrow cobbled streets, medieval hilltop castle,
old churches, traditional tiled houses, little shops and Roman bridge spanning the river that runs through the
town, exploring is just delightful. Tourism has had very little impact here – totally unlike the
commercialised Algarve resorts to the west of Faro.
There are
lots of little cafés and restaurants, many along the palm-lined banks of the river, offering cheap delicious
food. The covered market place next to the river which dates from the mid 19th century has been tastefully
restored and now houses many little shops and cafés.

For
serious shoppers, the new Tavira Gran Plaza shopping mall opened in 2009, with a large selection of shops and food
outlets.
The beautiful hills of the Serra do
Caldeirão are just a few kilometres north, with stunning views and small villages ideal for walking and
exploring. The border with Spain is about 30km east – a very interesting area with border castles, old
villages and the beautiful River Guadiana.
Monte Gordo.
If you like gambling or a good meal with an international cabaret
show, then visit the Casino complex at Monte Gordo. It is only a short trip by car, and the beaches are fabulous.
The Local Observatory.
The
Observatory is a short distance from Tavira. As the skies are
so clear here you can see many stars which you cannot see in other parts of Europe.
