The beach at Tavira has been named by The Lonely Planet as one of the
ten best beaches in the world. It is one of the selection of huge,
sandy and beautiful beaches in the eastern Algarve, all with EC Blue Flag status, and is reached by a short and
delightful trip in one of the small ferry boats that regularly travel up and down the Ria Formosa nature
reserve. The beach has several good quality restaurants, and sun
loungers/parasols to hire if required.

There are many other beaches in the area, equally large, sandy and clean, and relatively undiscovered even in high summer. They are all easily reached by car, train or bus. To entertain the children, there are several large water parks plus ZooMarine Theme Park on the western side of Faro - all with regular organised trips from Tavira and Cabanas. For golfing enthusiasts there are many world class courses nearby. Car hire is not at all essential for either Tavira or Cabanas but could be an advantage if you wish to explore all the delightful areas of interest which this part of Portugal has to offer.
